Drug companies may narrow Medicare coverage gap

(AP:WASHINGTON) Officials say the White House, congressional leaders and the pharmaceutical industry are discussing a plan to have drug companies pick up the cost of narrowing the coverage gap for seniors who receive prescription drugs through Medicare.

They emphasize there is no agreement on the negotiations over partially closing the so-called doughnut hole.

Also on the table is a plan for the drug companies to accept lower-than-planned payments from government health programs, to help pay for health care legislation that President Barack Obama is seeking.
